NIO minister Lord Caine has praised the “bravery” and “restraint” displayed by the security forces in Northern Ireland, following a visit to a new ‘Operation Banner’ exhibition in Co Armagh.

Organised by the Veterans’ Commissioner Danny Kinahan, the display at Brownlow House in Lurgan includes regimental and police uniforms, personal kit, and deactivated weapons, as well as information panels on the Troubles-era operation that became the longest continuous deployment in UK military history.

Lord Caine said: “It was a privilege to attend the Operation Banner exhibition and remember the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces during the longest continuous deployment in the history of the British Army.

"Without their contribution and that of other members of the security forces including the police, there would have been no peace process, and for that they command our enduring respect. Over 250,000 people served in the security forces during Operation Banner. The overwhelming majority did so with great bravery, professionalism, distinction and restraint to uphold democracy and the rule of law.

"They ensured that the future of Northern Ireland will only ever be determined by consent, and never by violence. We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude, which this Government will always honour."

Lord Caine added: “I also pay tribute to the office of the Northern Ireland Veterans’ Commissioner for organising this important educational resource.”

The exhibition will eventually move around the country by arrangement.

In a social media post, Mr Kinahan said: “I was privileged to launch our mobile Op Banner exhibition last night alongside war widow Hilda Vennard, sharing soldiers' stories from the NI Troubles. Huge thanks to the NI veterans, attendees, and all who helped make this possible. More booking details coming soon!”

Also on social media, one of those who attended said: “Hats off to those who organised this exhibition and displayed artefacts marking the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of the security forces.”
