Thought for the week: Are we still searching for peace in our hearts and lives?

When the famous 19th century English writer Herbert George (HG) Wells reached the age of retirement, he said: “Here I am at 65 still searching for peace!”

That was a very telling statement – here is a man who had everything that people long for in this world and they imagine would make them happy. Wells had made a name for himself, he had made a lot of money, he was popular and sought after, but all of these things hadn’t brought him inner peace in his heart and life.

The reality is that there are many people today who feel exactly the same. Every day we meet people from all walks of life who are still searching for satisfying and lasting peace in their lives.

The subject of peace is always in the news. We constantly hear about peace talks, peace agreements, peace treaties, peace envoys, peace keeping forces, peace initiatives – and so on. It is true to say that there are few topics more talked about and sought after in this life than peace. But yet we live in a world where there is very little peace.

On a personal level, many people know little or nothing about real, lasting peace. There are those who would give anything, and some would even give everything they have, if only it would bring them peace in their heart.

And because their search for peace has failed, there is now a large section of society who is turning to drink, drugs and all the pleasure crazes of this world in a vain attempt to get rid of their sorrows. There is even an increasing number of people who believe that the only answer, the only way to get rid of all the misery and the unrest, is to to end their life.

It is clear all across this world there are people longing and searching for peace in their heart and life, but they cannot find it. If that is your condition, then I want to turn you to the Bible because it contains a message of great hope, and it tells you plainly where real peace is to be found.

The Apostle Paul in the New Testament said: “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

It is clear, real peace is one of the priceless blessings of God’s Salvation. But to have the peace of God in your life you must first have made your peace with God. What that means is that you must stop resisting any longer God’s offer of Salvation to you, and by faith alone receive Jesus Christ and let Him into your heart to be your Saviour. Will you do that today?
