Tragic young parents killed in horror crash to have joint funeral service

A young couple who died in a car crash on Friday, will buried after a joint funeral service at Ballycastle Parish Church this morning.

Their funeral service will be held at 10am tomorrow and can be watched by webcam hereI

It is understood they will be buried after the service in Armoy.

Brigid Wilkinson, 21, originally from Ardoyne, was a full time mum and had been a passenger in the car with her partner of seven years, Owen McMullan, 25, from Armoy, Co Antrim.

The couple died on Friday (February 12) after a collision between a blue Honda and silver Forda on the Moyarget Road in Ballycastle just before 4.50pm.

The couple were pronounced dead at the scene.

Brigid, a talented GAA player, had played for Antrim Ladies Under 14 county team and club football for north Belfast side Ardoyne Kickhams.

She has been remembered by friends as young woman who brought fun and laughter to their lives, and she was honoured by her friends and teammates at Antrim Ladies GAA for her talent and kind heart.

They said: “We are devastated to hear the news of the tragic death of former Ardoyne and Antrim underage player Brigid Wilkinson. Brigid was a massive character with a heart of gold, who was loved by all her teammates and mentors. Our thoughts are with her family, her three children and her Ardoyne family.”

A post on funeraltimes.com for Brigid says she is the “Dearly loved partner of Owen (and) ‘much loved mother of Cadhla, Cliodhna Rose and Eoin Og’.

She is also described as the ‘dear daughter of Siobhan, dear sister of Fionn and Conall, dear granddaughter of Brigid and the late Hugo, R.I.P. and a very dear niece and cousin’.

Meanwhile a death notice for Owen says he was the ‘dearly loved partner of Brigid (Wilkinson) R.I.P., much loved father of Cadhla, Cliodhna Rose and Eoin Og, dear son of Brendan and Hilary, stepson of Richard, brother of Sean, grandson of Robert, Ann and the late Anne Brennan, a dear uncle, nephew and cousin’.

His funeral notice adds: “House and Funeral strictly private due to current restrictions.”

A message on Antrim Ladies Gaelic Association at the weekend said: “Everyone at Antrim LGFA is deeply saddened to hear the news of the sudden and tragic passing of one of our former U14 county players Brigid Wilkinson last night in Ballycastle.

“Brigid played her club football with CLG Ciceam Ard Eoin and played for her county during her time there.

“She was an extremely talented young player and a lovely girl both on and off the field.

“Our sympathies and prayers are with Brigid’s family along with the McMullan family, especially thinking of their 3 young children.

“Our condolences are also with all her friends in Ardoyne and Ballycastle. RIP Brigid”
