Gladys Anderson from Lurgan has been described as a “woman of very strong faith” who set “a fantastic example”.

Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart said: “Gladys was someone who was known and loved throughout Lurgan, particularly as a proud Mourneview resident and her loss will be most keenly felt by those who knew her best. As a woman of very strong faith she did not fear her own passing, but those left behind will have some wonderful memories.

“As Mayor of Craigavon I had the honour of hosting Gladys’ 100th birthday party and caught up with her regularly up until last year. She was also an honorary member of the DUP and as a party we mourn her passing.”

Mrs Lockhart added: “Gladys lived through some momentous times, and as we look ahead to the centenary of Northern Ireland it is remarkable to have known someone whose life spanned the creation of Northern Ireland and prior to that, through the First World War. We can all learn from the quiet experience of our most precious members of the community such as Gladys.”

Mrs Lockhart also paid tribute to Lurgan Free Presbyterian elder John Dummigan for helping Gladys over the years.

“Gladys really became part of their family and to them and everyone else who will miss someone so special my sincere sympathies are with them at this difficult time,” said the MP.
