'˜Peter Robinson would have pulled rabbit out of a hat' to save Stormont, says ex-spin doctor

Stormont's former chief spin doctor David Gordon has claimed Peter Robinson would have been able to avert the political crisis facing Northern Ireland if he was still in charge.

David Gordon, who was press secretary to the Executive Office, gave his thoughts on the collapse of the power-sharing institutions in a candid interview on BBC’s Stephen Nolan Show today.

Mr Gordon, who was editor of the Nolan Show prior to taking up his post at the Executive Office, said: “I think Peter Robinson would have found some remarkable way of getting them out of the problem they were in; a rabbit out of a hat that nobody even knew existed.”

Mr Gordon added that former first minister Mr Robinson had cultivated a relationship with deputy first minister martin McGuinness over a number of years, which he believes could have led to a solution being found to prevent the current crisis at Stormont.

He added: “It wasn’t always perfect but they had built up a relationship so it is possible they could have got a way through it.”

Mrs Foster and Mr McGuinness used Royal Prerogative powers to appoint Mr Gordon as press secretary to the Executive Office on a £75,000 a year salary last September.
