“The Executive is facing very challenging financial pressures which will impact on school budgets.

“My priority is to ensure funding is targeted at helping and supporting our children and young people and I will work with my department, the Education Authority and schools to make sure this happens.”

He added: “Every child is different and all deserve the best start in life. The bringing together of a wider range of child-focused responsibilities in the restructured Department of Education reflects the Executive’s commitment to supporting all of our children and young people.

“As minister I am looking forward to working with our schools, our early childhood education and child care providers, and our youth services to ensure that, together, we can meet the needs and nurture the aspirations of our children and young people.”

Education is about developing children to their fullest potential, he added.
