Speaking in today’s News Letter, a Sinn Fein MLA had called on Belfast City Council, the PSNI and the Housing Executive to take a “zero tolerance” approach to an anti-internment bonfire in the New Lodge area.

Caral Ni Chuilin said the local community has been “let down” by a lack of action to protect residents around the old Victoria Barracks site.

“Those behind this bonfire, which is a magnet for anti-social behaviour, are sticking two fingers up to local residents,” she said.

Ms Ni Chuilin added: “Tyres have now been added to this bonfire in a built-up residential area and that will mean that homes will be exposed to toxic fumes.

“It’s imperative that the police and the courts deal with any instances of anti-social behaviour connected to this bonfire.”
