Police charge man with GBH after Newcastle stabbing incident

Police have charged a 53-year-old man with grievous bodily harm with intent following a stabbing in Co Down on Tuesday.

The suspect is also charged with making threats to kill and possessing an offensive weapon and is due to appear at Downpatrick Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The incident took place on the Castlewellan Road in Newcastle around 7.35pm.

A man in his 40s is described as being in a stable condition in hospital as a result of the attack.

At the time of the incident, Det Insp Brian Foster said: “This occurred at quite a busy time. Therefore, I would ask anyone who was in the area at the time to contact detectives at Downpatrick police station on non emergency number 101.”

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie described the attack as “brutal and terrifying”.
