The former West Belfast MP claimed Northern Ireland emerged from a “maelstrom of sectarian violence” and therefore should not be celebrated.

“The North was born in a maelstrom of sectarian violence,” declared Mr. Adams.

“The Unionist establishment built apartheid regime. 2021 needs the widest possible debate.

“Must not just be about the past. It must about the future.”

Northern Ireland was created in 1921, when Ireland was partitioned - the 100th anniversary of the country will be celebrated in 2021.
