Christ Church this year marks its 50th anniversary and, while the anniversary celebrations had to be scaled back, due to the current pandemic, the minister there, the Rev Richard McIlhatton, explained that tomorrow’s worship was in some ways reminiscent of how it all began.

“Five years before our church was built in 1970, the congregation met in wooden huts, which required two services on a Sunday, so everyone could take part. Now, with social distancing introduced, we have reverted to two services to fit in those who want to come.”

Since becoming moderator in June, Dr Bruce has recorded a weekly online Sunday service for the whole Presbyterian family, especially those who cannot get to church.

“Visiting congregations, sharing God’s word, encouraging them in their work and the sharing of special days, are the bread and butter of the life of a moderator. To be able to make my first visit, especially on an occasion like this will be very special,” said Dr Bruce.

In Dundonald, Christ Church started life as Ballybeen estate was being built as people moved out of Belfast in the mid-1960s, due to the Troubles. The Christ Church congregation now has 230 families, comprising 500 people. During the current pandemic the church has helped deliver 1,000 food parcels and prescriptions to needy people in Dundonald.
