Quinn murder suspect freed

A man arrested by gardai investigating the murder of Paul Quinn in Co Armagh almost nine years ago has been released without charge.

The suspect, aged in his 50s, was detained near Castleblayney on Thursday.

Gardai said they also carried out searches on ground close to the Co Monaghan town in connection with the murder.

Mr Quinn, from Cullyhanna, was found at farm buildings in October 2007. The 21-year-old had been severely beaten. His family has consistently blamed members of the IRA but Sinn Fein has denied republican involvement in the killing.

Stephen and Breege Quinn, the dead man’s parents, were notified of the latest Garda operation.

Last week, Mr Quinn said: “We are delighted and it just goes to show that the guards are not giving up and are still at it. It’s a long time but it gives us a lift that they are still working and going on ahead with the investigation.”

Yesterday, a Garda spokeswoman said the suspect was released on Friday and that a report has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The BBC has revealed that detectives using specialist radar equipment to search the site at Tullycoora discovered large quantities of waste that had been illegally buried.
