Reaction: Viable device found in Cushendun

Around lunchtime on Sunday a PSNI spokesman said the security alert in the seaside village had ended and the Glendun Road had been re-opened.

A PSNI spokesman said: “ATO attended the scene and declared the suspicious object a viable device. It has been taken away for further forensic examination.”

Sinn Féin MLA for East Antrim Oliver McMullan who slammed those who left an explosive device on the Glendun Road at Cushendun said: “Cushendun is quiet town which is however a popular visiting spot for tourists at this time of year travelling along the Antrim coastline and to the Glens, especially with the recent good weather.

“For anyone to leave an explosive device on one of the main roads in and out of the town is sheer recklessness and shows absolute disregard for the residents of this town and passers by.

“It is to be condemned outright. There is no logic to this act and those behind it need to realise there is no support for this type of action.

“I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area to report that to the PSNI.”

Detective Sergeant Wallace has appealed for anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in and around the Glendun Road area of Cushendun to contact Police on the non-emergency number 101.
