'˜Respected couple' targeted in '˜vicious' Tandragee burglary

Councillor Berry spoke out after the aggravated burglary, which police said took place at a house in the Portadown Road area on Thursday, March 9.

A police spokesperson said: “It was reported that shortly after 9.30pm, a number of men, one armed with a poker, forced entry to the house and threatened the occupants, a couple aged in their 70’s.

“A sum of cash was handed over before the men tied up the occupants and left them locked in a bathroom. The man and woman suffered minor cuts to their wrists and were left badly shaken by their ordeal.”

Inspector Philip Quinn said: “The intruders spoke with southern accents and wore black clothes, scarves covering their faces and woollen hats. It is unclear at this time if they left the scene in a vehicle or on foot.”

Independent councillor Paul Berry said: “I was disgusted to learn this morning that a vicious robbery took place on Thursday evening at the home of a very respected couple on the Portadown road in the town.

“My heart goes out to the couple and their wider family on this wicked and frightening robbery and I intend to call with the couple when things calm down and the PSNI carry out their forensics.

“From speaking to the PSNI Inspector, it is clear that these thugs were professionals which leaves it even more difficult for the police to try and apprehend them but I would appeal to anyone who noticed anything suspicious to report it immediately to the PSNI.

“I have no doubt that the local community will rally around this couple at this very distressing time and we can assure them of our prayers and full support at this time of adversity.

“Over recent weeks there have been similar type robberies and from speaking to one victim two days ago it has caused her much stress and anxiety but these thugs don’t care about the after effects. It is important that we all work closely with the PSNI to have these thugs taken off our streets.”
