The woman, named locally as Clare Smyth, and her young daughter were killed when a quad bike collided with a tractor on Whitepark Road at around 4.50pm.

A second young girl, also believed to be a daughter of Mrs. Smyth, was airlifted to hospital by the Northern Ireland Air Ambulance where her condition has been described as "critical".

“Yesterday’s fatal accident, in which Clare Smyth and her young daughter lost their lives, has cast a deep pall of sorrow over the entire area," wrote Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) leader and MLA, Jim Allister on social media on Wednesday morning.

"Ryan’s loss of his beloved wife and child in the one incident, and the serious injury of his other daughter, is nigh beyond comprehension," added Mr. Allister.

One friend described Mrs. Smyth as a "lovely young woman" who always had a "smile on her face".

"Totally devastating news, Clare was a lovely young woman who always had a smile on her face," said the friend.

"Thoughts to the whole Smyth and Dobbin family circle, two beautiful girls she had and sadly one has been taken far far too soon with her mummy and other fighting her life - rest easy angels".

Another friend described the mother and daughter as "just beautiful".

"Clare and her wee daughter were just beautiful - heartbreaking.

"I am praying for Clare's other wee girl and I hope she makes a full recovery," said the friend.
