Search efforts diverted to rescue man in water

The incident happened when a public search as well as a planned search was taking place for the 23-year-old who died on Thursday morning when he was believed to have entered the River Foyle.

Foyle Search and Rescue received a report from the PSNI just before 3pm yesterday to say a person had been observed entering the water.

The voluntary group said: “Foyle Search & Rescue boat crew were diverted from the search (for Jack Glenn), arriving on scene, locating and rescuing a male from the river.

“He was transferred to Prehen base and removed onward to hospital by NIAS. The Police Service of Northern Ireland were also in attendance.”

They added: “Foyle Search & Rescue with the assistance of Mourne River SAR & CRS will continue to plan and carry out searches until Jack is returned.”

The mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council has shared the “heartfelt thanks” of the late Mr Glenn’s family with volunteers who are searching to recover his body.

Alderman Hilary McClintock extended the message on behalf of Jack Glenn Sr, who she said had paid tribute to “the people of this city and entire region for their compassion, support and willingness in their efforts to search for Jack and bring him home.”

A land and water-based search operation has been taking place since Thursday with hundreds of volunteers scouring the river banks.

A prayer service was held at the Peace Bridge on Saturday evening.
