Six-vehicle crash leaves three injured and brings motorway to standstill

The Westlink in Belfast re-opened at about 9.15am after a serious collision involving six vehicles.

Three people have been taken to hospital after a car and a number of vans and lorries are believed to have collided on the country-bound lane at around 4am today (January 27).

The pictures here show the traffic either crawling by or at a total standstill on the motorway both in and out of north Belfast.

A PSNI spokesman said one male sustained serious leg injuries during the incident.

A spokeswoman from Belfast Trust said the three patients in the Royal Victoria Hospital after the collision were “stable”.

Although the vehicles have been removed and the Westlink reopened there were severe knock-on delays are causing major congestion for motorists.

Traffic on the M2 was stretching back to Templepatrick, County Antrim.

There was also heavy congestion on the M3 and Sydenham bypass.
