Snow risk from Friday night to Saturday evening

The Met Office has issued a warning for snow and high winds which will remain in place until 6pm on Saturday.

The Yellow Weather Warning began at 6pm on Friday, and during the 24-hour period it covers, meterologist Emma Sharples said snow of up to five centimetres (about two inches) may fall on higher ground.

The cold air is set to move in from the north and west, and areas which are exposed to winds from these directions are likely to be most significantly affected.

Overnight on Thursday to Friday the highest wind speed in the Province was 85mph, recorded at Orlock Point, Co Down – with only the Western Isles and Shetland having seen higher gusts as of 2pm on Friday.

Saturday’s temperatures are set to be in “low single figures,” said Ms Sharples.

Sunday is expected to be less windy, with warmer air spreading across the Province, along with probable outbreaks of rain, before winds pick up again on Monday (with a 24-hour Yellow Warning valid from 12.01am on Monday).
