Somme coin on sale to mark centenary of battle

A specially minted coin marking the Battle of the Somme has been created.

Orangemen in Portadown launched the coin to mark the centenary of the devastating battle, which began in summer 1916.

One of the coins has already been presented to DUP First Minister Arlene Foster.

As the Co Armagh Twelfth demonstration will be held in Portadown this July, the coin also reflects this important occasion for the district.

The coin costs £6, and can be obtained by contacting district chairman Alan Burns.

He said they had initially ordered 4,000, adding that the items are selling well (with someone having recently bought a batch of 50) – with the possibility of more being ordered.
