Frank Bratley had been found dead on Tuesday afternoon at his bungalow on the eastern edge of Banbridge in Co Down, and police said they were treating the death as suspicious.

However, a forensic examination of his body is required before police can definitively state whether foul play was involved.

Police were unable to say when it would be carried out.

It is understood the PSNI are not responsible for the scheduling of post-mortems.

The police have so far declined to state why they think his death was suspicious.

Mr Bratley is believed to have been English and to have been resident in the town for around two decades.

He was 85, and lived in the Old Forge area.

DUP Upper Bann MLA Carla Lockhart had said that residents were uneasy after news about his death broke late on Tuesday night.

Police have asked for anyone who noticed suspicious or unusual activity in the Old Forge area between 7am and 2pm on Tuesday to call them.
