Support for RUC memorial

More than 2,000 people have now signed an online petition calling for a memorial to fallen police officers to be returned to it original position in a Londonderry PSNI station.

The commander at Strand Road, Superintendent Mark McEwan, has been heavily criticised since it was revealed that the plaques had been moved to an area used for photocopying.

The son of an RUC reservist shot dead in the city in 1983 said he was outraged that the memorial had been removed “to appease republicans”.

A DUP delegation including East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell is due to meet with Superintendent McEwan at Strand Road on Friday.

UUP MLA Ross Hussey has already visited the station and said he acknowledges the superintendent’s apology for any upset caused by the relocation, and is reassured that a new site for the memorial will be suitably respectful.
