Suspected drink driver '˜fell out of car at airport'

Roshan George, 40, was also disqualified from getting behind the wheel for five years at Belfast Magistrates’ Court today.

A judge told him: “This court will not tolerate people taking a vehicle out on the roads in the state you were in.”

George, of Rosemary Drive in Bangor, Co Down, was convicted of disorderly behaviour and failing to provide a specimen of breath on suspicion of being over the limit.

The court heard he was spotted parking near the front door of the terminal at George Best Belfast City Airport on June 30.

Staff then informed police as he was seen reversing over bollards.

A prosecution lawyer claimed he fell out of the car before becoming abusive.

Police who arrived at the scene smelt alcohol and a number of empty bottles in the boot of the car.

George told officers he had just dropped a friend off but failed to provide a breath sample.

According to the prosecutor he then directed his aggression at police once he was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

“He made comments calling them racists,” she added.

A defence lawyer said George, who moved to Northern Ireland from India ten years ago, acknowledged his behaviour was “extremely dangerous”.

District Judge Liam McNally noted it was his fourth drink driving-related conviction.

“As far as I’m concerned you’re a real risk to the public,” he told the defendant.

“(You were) so drunk that it was brought to the attention of staff at the airport and you then abused them.”

George was imprisoned for four months for the motoring offence, with a concurrent three-month term imposed for disorderly behaviour.

The Courts Service later confirmed he was granted bail to appeal against the sentence.

However, he was refused permission to continue driving pending the outcome of that challenge. ends
