Two women and a man were detained following the incident early on Thursday morning and the suspects, in their 30s and 40s, are being held separately at Clontarf, Swords and Ballymun Garda stations.

The shooting happened as gardai attempted to force entry to a home in the Barnwell Drive area.

The struck garda and the other injured man were treated at the scene and taken to hospital.

A door knocked from its hinges lay outside the property later on Thursday morning as gardai remained at the scene.

The Garda Ombudsman was informed of the incident, a standard procedure when gardai discharge firearms.

Ireland’s Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan sent his best wishes to the injured garda.

“I learned with concern this morning that a member of An Garda Siochana was shot and injured in the course of a Garda operation in north Dublin,” he said.

“I wish him a full and speedy recovery. Incidents like this highlight the danger that can face members of An Garda Siochana in carrying out their duties.
