Top quality Chestnutt bulls sell at Ballymena

Friday 22nd January saw the Chestnutt bull sale rise to a new level as word spread throughout Northern Ireland of the commercial suitability and quality of the Chestnutt bulls.

There was standing room only in Ballymena Mart as bidders fought to secure one of the lots on offer.

The Charolais bulls on offer were all by the same stock sire Lissadoair Eden. The first to sell was Bushmills Jeronimo which proved cheapest on the day selling for £2420 to J McFarlane, Omagh. Second to sell was Bushmills Jock, Victor’s pick on the day selling for £2940 to B Arthurs, Kircubbin. Bushmills Just the Job the growthiest bull in the batch sold for £2570 to T Rainey, Magherafelt. The next two bulls Bushmills Jetsetter and Jonny sold for £2680 apiece to S Dougan, Gilnahirk and M Thompson, Londonderry respectively. Much admired as a calf Bushmills Jollyrodger sold for £2890 to W Annett, Rathfriland. The last in the ring and making the top price was Bushmills Jaguar who sold for £3260 to N and S Wilson, Ballymena.

The Aberdeen Angus also sold well with two bulls by Laheens Jack. Taking the top price was Clougher Elvis £2630 to J T Foster, Castlederg followed by Clougher Elixir which sold for £2310 to K Flanagan, Armagh. Clougher Earl an ideal bull for heifers sold for £2000 to M Smyth, Cloughmills.
