Tributes paid to tragic Co Down man killed in Canary Islands

The 40-year-old from Downpatrick was killed after being struck by a car last Wednesday.

He had been on holiday with a group of friends and had just landed at Fuerteventura airport.

It has been reported that he then stopped at a bar before leaving with the intention of walking the four miles to his accommodation in the capital Puerto del Rosario.

But as he walked along the road he was hit by a car which came upon him on a bend.

His brother, Joe, posted on Facebook and said: “RIP big bro. Love you always and forever.”

Also on Facebook, another relative of Mr Campbell’s posted: “Would just like to ask my friends on Facebook to pray for my nephew jim Campbell who was killed in Spain.

She added: “Keep his family in your prayers and pray they get him home soon.”

Another post read: “R.I.P soupy can’t get ya outa my head kid all sorts of memories coming back most of all ya always looked out for me.”

Mr Campbell’s relatives have sought help from the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust to have his remains brought home to Downpatrick.

Colin Bell, who runs the charity said: “At the minute it is very sketchy and his family have no details either.

“They are hoping to get some sort of police report and won’t have any real idea until tomorrow. They don’t even know what he was doing and they are in the dark too.”

Mr Bell added: “None of the family have gone over as yet, well not as far as I know.”

Meanwhile SDLP Councillor for the area, Dermot Curran, said he wanted to send his condolences to the Campbell family.

“This is a terrible situation to find themselves in when he went on holidays with friends and all of a sudden his life is extinct,” he said.

“This is a terrible situation for his family.”
