Cullyhana man Paul, 21, was lured to a shed in Castleblayney and beaten to death by a gang armed with clubs and bars in October 2007.

He was beaten so badly that virtually every bone in his body was broken. His family blames members of the IRA, but Sinn Fein has long denied republican involvement.

Paul’s mother, Breege, confirmed to the News Letter that Garda have told her that a new series of DNA tests will be carried out.

“Yes that is what we have been told,” she said.

She was not sure if they have done any DNA tests on evidence up until now but understands the new impetus in the investigation has been prompted by developments in DNA technology.

“You see the Garda won’t tell us everything. They are just telling us they are working away on the case and we are very happy with that. They must have had them [the exhibits] tested before but there is new technology now.”

She believes some of the items were taken from the barn where Paul was murdered.

“They are going to start reinterviewing people when Covid is over,” she added.

It is understood that Garda are set to re-test around 200 exhibits seized in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan for DNA.

Items being re-examined include clothing from some of the suspects and a vehicle.

A dedicated scientist from Forensic Science Ireland is now working on the case, using the latest DNA technology, according to the Irish Sun.

The PSNI escorts the Garda into Northern Ireland when needed, she said. However, the Garda is leading the investigation as the murder took place in the Republic.

It is understood the PSNI is also re-examining evidence.

Mrs Quinn confirmed her family is not suffering any intimidation despite being continually outspoken in calling for justice for Paul since his brutal murder.

A Garda spokesman said: “The investigation into the murder of Paul Quinn on 20th Oct 2007 remains an active live investigation by Gardaí from Carrickmacross Garda station following an examination by the Serious Crime Review Team. An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to any person with any information on the murder of Paul Quinn to contact An Garda Síochána at Carrickmacross 042 9690190, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station or the PSNI.”
