Two-year-old boy killed in Londonderry collision named locally

The toddler – who has been named locally as Ronan McGavigan – was struck by a Citroen Picasso close to the Brandywell football stadium around 1.15pm.

Lone Moor Road was closed for several hours while specialist collision investigators examined the scene.

The driver of the car involved has been spoken to by police who say their enquiries are on-going.

A friend of the McGavigan family set up a crowdfunding page at the Just Giving site to help ease any financial burden.

She said: “Our whole city is shocked and saddened with this news today, and we are all grieving your loss. Thoughts and prayers are with you all. RIP Ronan (Ro Ro) xxx.”

Another family friend posted the message: “Sleep tight wee Ronan, we had the pleasure of meeting you for a short time & what a cool wee dude you were. Can’t even begin to imagine how missed you’ll be ❤xxx.”

Foyle DUP MLA Gary Middleton said his “condolences go to the family of the young boy and those involved”

Sinn Fein councillor Patricia Logue described the incident as “tragic”.

She said: “I want to express my sympathy to the family and friends of this young boy. It is a tragic and very personal loss for them.”

Cllr Logue added: “They are in our thoughts and prayers at this time, as they are trying to come to terms with such dreadful news.”

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has any information that could assist the investigation, to contact Strand Road on 101.
