Abortion pills in NI unthinkable at time when emphasis is on saving lives say pro life campaigners

Pro-life groups in NI have voiced their disappointment at the “opportunistic moves” which have brought about the introduction of abortion pills in the Province.

Early abortions – covering the first nine weeks and six days of pregnancy – are to be provided in an emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic, a charity has said.

Dr Audrey Simpson, chairwoman of Informing Choices NI, said: “We are delighted to provide this interim central access point to enable access to early medical abortion services in our local health trusts.”

Accessing terminations will involve attending a local clinic to take the first abortion pill while the second set of pills can be taken at home.

Dr Simpson added: “We stand by women and girls and all pregnancy choices.”

Both Lives Matters said it was disappointed at the “opportunistic moves of the pro-abortion lobby to force the most liberal abortion regime on the people of Northern Ireland, especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic”.

Marion Woods from Both Lives Matter said: “It is interesting that Dr Simpson is claiming to stand with women and girls and all pregnancy choices when the reality is that what is being promoted is only abortion.

“It is vital now more than ever that there are real alternatives to abortion in NI. At a time when the value of life, in the context of a global pandemic, is being discussed on every news outlet, the push to bring in a regime that will see the ending of the lives of our preborn children is incredibly worrying.”

Bernie Smyth, founder of Precious Life, said: “At a time when necessary and life-saving care such as cancer treatments and screenings are being postponed to preserve hospital equipment, beds and staff, it is all the more outrageous for anyone to suggest that the killing of children in the womb should be a priority.

“There are other progressive and compassionate solutions that we can provide to women who find themselves in very scary and unprecedented times right now.

“The deliberate killing of children in the womb at any stage of development should be unthinkable at a time when the emphasis is on saving lives.”
