Peter Cardwell, from Richhill, has lost his job as special adviser to the Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor at Ministry of Justice.

In a tweet on Thursday, Mr Cardwell, who has held a number of special adviser roles in the Tory government, said he was leaving the government after three and a half years.

He tweeted: “I am delighted @RobertBuckland has been re-confirmed as Justice Secretary. Sadly, in reshuffles Special Advisers sometimes do not survive, and after three-and-a-half wonderful years I am leaving Government. I wish the Johnson administration and everyone in it all the very best.”

Mr Cardwell had held the role since August last year. His most high profile role in Northern Ireland terms came as special adviser to then NI secretary of state James Brokenshire between 2016 and 2018.

He was previously a reporter on the ITV television show This Morning.
