VIDEO: Ballymena fire leaves woman, 50, in hospital

Firefighters have been praised for rescuing a 50-year-old woman from a burning house.

The fire broke out on Tuesday evening at Woodcroft Brae in Ballymena, and 29 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

Neighbours were concerned that there may have been children inside, but firefighters searched and established this was not the case.

The woman was initially taken to Antrim Area Hospital, but was later transferred to Altnagelvin hospital in the Western Health Trust Area.

She was suffering from smoke inhalation.

A spokesman for that trust said that, as of about 9.15pm on Wednesday, she was in a stable condition.

The police were initially investigating the cause of the blaze, but by Wednesday afternoon they had determined that it was not suspicious.

Billy Ashe, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, said the woman had been found in a “smoke-filled, downstairs room”.

He added: “I wish to record my sincere appreciation for the work of the NI Fire and Rescue Service adding that while the woman was unconscious when she was rescued, the firefighters undoubtedly saved her life and I look forward to her making a full recovery.”
