Supreme court judges are deserving of acclaim in Ashers ruling

A UK supreme court ruled unanimously in favour of a Belfast bakery which refused to ice a cake bearing the message 'support gay marriage'.

The decision follows in the wake of the US Supreme Court ruling in favour of a Colorado bakery in a similar case.

Daniel McArthur, whose family owns Ashers, was elated over the court ruling.

“We are very grateful to the judges,” he said. “We did not turn down this order because of the person who made it, but because of the message itself.”

Deserving of acclaim are the five justices of the UK Supreme Court — Lady Hale, Lord Mance, Lord Kerr, Lord Hodge and Lady Black — who declared there was “no discrimination” against the plaintiff.

In today’s upside-down world, the UK verdict is particularly praiseworthy.
