The Omnilux Contour Face is one of the best-known at-home LED masks, backed by more than 20 years of research. I tested it for several weeks to find out whether it really improves skin and justifies its £348 price tag.

With more than two decades of research and development behind it, the Omnilux Contour Face arrives with some serious credentials. The brand has been developing medical-grade LED technology since 2003. Its technology is used by dermatologists and aesthetic practitioners around the world, and customers have left thousands of five-star reviews online.

With a price tag of around £348, you really want this at-home LED mask to live up to its reputation. I tested it to find out if the multi-award-winning mask improved my skin sufficiently to warrant the cost.

What I liked about the Omnilux Contour Face LED face mask

First up, the box is pretty and if you're gifting it, the lucky recipient will love it before they've even opened the lid. Good start! There’s a thorough user guide but if you’re slightly impatient, like me, use the handy six-step card to get you up and running in no time. The card also features a QR code you can zap to get extra information.

Perhaps one of the biggest plus points is that instead of a rigid plastic shell, the Omnilux Contour Face is made from flexible medical-grade silicone, allowing it to mould closely to the contours of your face. Adjustable straps hold it securely in place without feeling restrictive, and because it's light, you’ll find it's comfortable enough to wear while lounging around or even walking about. The box contains a little white bag to keep it clean while not in use, always handy to have and something you’d expect from a premium product.

The mask combines red light at 633nm with near-infrared light at 830nm, two clinically studied wavelengths selected for their ability to reach different layers of the skin. They're designed to stimulate collagen production, soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone and support the skin's natural repair process.

Using the mask is a piece of cake. Cleanse, secure the mask using the adjustable straps, connect the rechargeable controller and press the single power button. The treatment lasts just 10 minutes before switching itself off automatically. Omnilux recommends using the mask three to five times a week for four to six weeks before moving on to maintenance treatments.

What surprises me most is how relaxing the experience becomes. The LEDs generate a gentle warmth without ever feeling uncomfortable, while the soft silicone is noticeably less irritating than the hard-shell LED masks. Those 10-minute sessions are now something I actually look forward to - and probably will enjoy even more so in the colder, winter months.

If you and the people you live with are new to LED face masks, expect a few raised eyebrows the first few times you wear it. It certainly isn't the most glamorous look.

As with any treatment designed to stimulate collagen, patience is essential. This isn't a product that promises dramatic overnight results, nor should it. Instead, the benefits build steadily with regular use. And I believe you will see benefits. After almost four weeks of following the recommended routine, I’ve noticed my skin looking brighter and feeling noticeably smoother. My complexion appears more even, some of the redness around my cheeks has become less noticeable and my skin feels firmer overall. The improvements are subtle enough to look natural, but significant enough that I can clearly see the difference.

Another bonus to this particular mask is there's no recovery time afterwards and the compact rechargeable controller makes it simple to take away whenever I'm travelling. For a product that relies on consistency to deliver results, that's a real strength in my book.

What I don’t like so much about the Omnilux Contour Face LED face mask

At £348, it's one of the more expensive at-home LED masks on the market. If you can afford it, and especially if you’re buying it as an alternative to regular in-clinic LED treatments, then it’s an investment worth considering.

It also focuses solely on red and near-infrared light therapy, so if your main concern is acne, you may be better served by a device that also includes blue light. Other masks I’ve tested offer a selection of light types treating different concerns.

Most importantly, this isn't a product you can use sporadically and expect results. Like any collagen-stimulating treatment, it rewards consistency, so you'll need to commit to regular sessions if you want to see the benefits. If you’re not the sort of person who can follow the guidance long term you may well be wasting your money.

My verdict

So, should you splash out and buy the Omnilux Contour Face? If you're expecting an instant transformation, probably not. But if you're looking for a clinically backed LED mask that delivers gradual, natural-looking improvements and you're prepared to put in the time, the Omnilux Contour Face is easy to recommend.

I love how comfortable it is to wear, and I think it's exceptionally well made. Most importantly it has improved my skin. I’ve actually been using mine in the run-up to my son’s wedding and I’m confident that the mask has played a big part in getting my skin celebration-ready. Knowing it's backed by more than two decades of research offers a good level of reassurance, and my view is that it's a device that wholeheartedly deserves its solid reputation.
