ATHLETICS: Ciara Mageean shows her class at Mary Peters Track

The 24-year-old Portaferry girl, already Rio bound for 1,500 metres, clocked 2:02.84 for the two-lap distance - a European qualifying time and will probably have taken the Northern Ireland record if she had been paced.

World Masters champion Kelly Neely went with her for the first lap and came second in 2:06.11 with Erin McIlveen third.

Afterwards, Ciara said: “It was tough as no one wanted to pace. I wanted to race to support my local championship.

“The 800 is a good tester for my legs but I will be running the 1,500 in the Europeans in preparation for Rio. I am having my best season in a long time.”

Former World indoors high hurdler Ben Reynolds clocked 14.15 in a rain storm to take his fourth title while Adam McMullen won the long jump with 7.50 and added the 100.

University’s champion Adam Mellon won the 400 in 47.88. Double Rio indoors gold medallist David Gillick ran 47.50 in his semi. There were wins for young stars John Kelly in shot, Caitlin Maguire in 100 and 200. Sommer Lecky high jump and Lydia Mills long jump.

Hayley Murray from Rugby and Northampton threw a great 57.30 to win her fourth hammer crown while Catherine Whoriskey added the 5,000 to her 10,000 win with Andrew Monaghan just beating Conor Duffy in the mens race.

Conor Bradley won a close 1,500 ahead of Danny Mooney and Gareth Hill.
