Belfast archer Patrick Huston gets Great Britain's Rio Olympics campaign under way

The Belfast archer scored 366 to rank 38th in the men’s individual ranking round, which establishes the draw for the elimination round taking place next week.

But South Korean archer Kim Woojin grabbed the headlines at the Sambodromo - venue for Rio’s annual carnival - by scoring a world record 700 score from 72 arrows.

Huston revealed he was helped through his first Games experience by a series of motivational notes inspired by the former Olympic shooter and now sports psychologist Lanny Bassham.

Bassham created his “Mental Management System” after falling short in the 1972 Games in Munich - and went on to win 22 world titles and the gold medal in Montreal four years later.

Focused by notes including “I am the 2016 Olympic champion”, Huston said: “I would not have got my Olympic place if I had not followed Lanny Bassham’s system.

“One of its tenets is the more you think and write about something the more likely it is to happen, so one of the things to do is write directive affirmations.

“I have notes pasted up on my wall in the Olympic Village and it is just something to inspire me and keep me focused. The mental aspect is crucial in archery and this is a great way of dealing with it.”

Woojin got the Games off to a flying start with his historic total, which beat by a single point the record set by his compatriot Im Dong Hyun at the equivalent stage of the London 2012 Olympics.

South Korea has won 19 Olympic archery gold medals, easily eclipsing any other nation, and won three of the four available gold medals in London.

Kim said: “I practised more than everyone else and I gave my best in the entire round.

“Tomorrow there is a more important match (in the team event) so I will not be celebrating today. I want to focus on the Games but maybe later I’ll get to focus on Brazil.”

Home favourite Marcus Dalmeida - dubbed the “Neymar of Archery” - scored 658 to finish four places above Huston in 34th place.
