The event, which will be held on Sunday, September 18, is an extension of the Belfast Marathon, which has been running since 1982 on May Day Monday with increased fields all the time. MENCAP will be the nominated charity for both races.

David Seaton MBE, Chairman of the Belfast City Marathon Organising Committee, said: “We have been overwhelmed with the success of the Half Marathon in the last three years. For the 2016 event we are welcoming our title sponsor Deep RiverRock who have great experience and we look forward to working together to increase participants on race day.”

The Half Marathon will start and finish in Ormeau Park convenient to the City Centre. It will pass major landmarks including Belfast City Hall, Albert Clock and Titanic Quarter.

Last year’s Half Marathon was won by Irish based Kenyan Gideon Kimosop in a photo finish with compatriot Dan Tanui - both running for the Project Africa team. Paddy Hamilton and Brendan Teer were next.

Mercy Jemutai and Rosini Gibionia gave Project Africa the top two places ahead of Catriona Jennings with Laura Graham heading the locals.

Online entry is now open at www.belfastcitymarathon.org.

Meanwhile, Amy Foster again just missed out on the World Qualifying Mark of 7.32 when she competed in the International Meeting in Metz, France.

The NI record holder ran 7.37 in her semi-final before clocking 7.34 in the final.
