Belfast Giants cruise past Fife Flyers

The Stena Line Belfast Giants ended their regular season campaign with a regulation 5-1 home win against the Fife Flyers at The SSE Arena on Saturday.

Goals from Mike Radja (2), Jim Vandermeer, Kris Beech and Colin Shields saw the Giants remain in third place in the Elite League standings, securing a second leg home play-off game on Monday March 28, face-off 7pm.

The Giants began the game without Johan Ejdepalm, Brandon Benedict and Derrick Walser as Craig Peacock returned from suspension.

The hosts dominated the opening period and led 2-0 at the first intermission.

Mike Radja’s 29th goal of the season broke the deadlock at 14:16 with a powerplay goal assisted by Mitch Ganzak and James Desmarais before Jim Vandermeer scored the Giants second of the game and their second powerplay goal at 19:35, assisted by Chris Higgins and Michael Forney.

Only 49 seconds into the second period and it was 3-0. Mike Radja got his second of the game to make it 30 for the season, assisted by James Desmarais and Jim Vandermeer.

The Flyers pulled one back at 29:44 as Shayne Stockton scored on the powerplay however the Giants further extended their lead to 4-1 at 32:41 with a Kris Beech powerplay goal.

The Giants rounded off the victory with a fifth goal on the night at 57:54 as Colin Shields finished off a nice pass from Mark Garside.

The next Giants home game will be the final one of the season – on Easter Monday 28th March in the 2nd Leg of the Playoff Quarter Final.
