Barry McGuigan states reason why Scott Quigg didn't engage Carl Frampton

Frampton and Quigg went head to head for the IBF and WBA Super-bantamweight World titles - with Frampton winning the clash on points after 12 rounds.

Bury fighter Quigg started the contest very slowly and former WBA Featherweight World champion McGuigan says there was a reason why Quigg did not exchange his fighter in the early rounds.

“At the end of the day, Frampton was just too good for Quigg.

“While I admire Quigg’s guts and determination, fighting on with a broken jaw, the fact that he incurred an injury of that magnitude is testament to Frampton’s power.

“People ask how different it might have been if Quigg were not so shot-shy in the first half of the fight and come out swinging, as he did later in the contest when he was so far behind.

“The answer is - An earlier finish.Frampton would have taken him out.

“Of course, we would like the fight to be entertaining, but in the final analysis it’s about winning. Frampton did what he had to do in the circumstances in front of him. Now we move on,” he added.

And McGuigan admits they are still planning Frampton’s next outing after beating Quigg in front of a packed Manchester Arena.

“Doubling up on belts is great in theory, but in practice success gets complicated.

“Carl now has mandatory obligations to the IBF and WBA after last week’s super bantamweight victory over Quigg. But he can’t meet both within the short time frames imposed.

“The WBA have ordered a match against Guillermo Rigondeaux and the IBF a defence against Shinji Wake.

“Cleary there is a big decision to make about Frampton’s next move, but what I can say is there will be no immediate rematch with Quigg.”

And McGuigan added that WBC Featherweight World champion Leo Santa Cruz would be an interesting encounter.

“We would prefer a fight with Santa Cruz, who stopped Kiko Martinez on the same night Frampton saw off Quigg.

“That is a fight we would love, and I guarantee it would be the barn-burner that everybody wanted to see against Quigg. But before we sit down to consider our plans we are taking a few days to let the dust settle,” he added.

Meanwhile in MMA Conor McGregor suffered a submission loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in Las Vegas.

McGregor was badly hurt by punches from Diaz in the second round and attempted a takedown as a result, but the American finished him off.
