Belfast boxer Freddie Gilroy has died aged 80

Legendary Belfast boxer Freddie Gilroy has died aged 80.

Gilroy won an Olympic bronze medal for Ireland in 1956.

He also won British, Commonwealth and European titles as a professional and lost on points to France’s Alphonse Halimi in a World Bantamweight title fight in 1960.

In 1963, Gilroy beat Belfast rival John Caldwell for the British and Empire titles but retired after the fight.
