Ireland boxers opponents named at Olympic Games in Rio

The Irish boxing team have learnt the identities of the opposition they will face at the Olympic Games in Rio in their opening bouts.

Lightweight David Oliver Joyce is first up on Saturday. The St Michael’s Athy fighter will face African islander Andrique Allisop of the Seychelles.

Ballymena welterweight Steven Donnelly is next up and fights in the last 32 on Sunday against Algerian Zohir Kedache.

Paddy Barnes received a bye into the last 16 where he will face the winner of this Saturday’s bout between Spaniard Samuel Carmona and Armenian Artur Hovhannisyan.

The Belfast light flyweight will be in action on Monday.

Joe Ward has also received a bye and will be in light heavyweight last 16 action against either German Serge Michel or Ecuadorian Carlos Andres Mina on Wednesday August 10.

Michael O’Reilly has been handed a bye into the middleweight last 16 on where he will face either Misael Rodríguez of Mexico or Iraqi Waheed Abdul-Ridha on Friday August 12.

Brendan Irvine will be in last 32 flyweight action on Saturday 13 against Uzbek Shakhobiddin Zoirov.

Michael Conlan is straight into the bantamweight last 16 and will face the winner the bout between Armenia’s Aram Avagyan and Japanese fighter Arashi Morisaka on Sunday August 14.

Having received a bye as expected, Katie Taylor is immediately in a medal fight, and will face either home fighter Adriana Araujo or Finland’s Mira Potkonen on Monday August 15 with bronze on the line. Araujo and Potkonen meet on Friday August 12. Taylor has previously beaten both opponents.

Boxing at the Riocentro starts on Saturday.
