James Fryers looking to make his mark at Europa Hotel

James Fryers has put in the miles on the road, hours in the gym and now the Belfast super-featherweight gets his first chance to get himself a shot at the British title.

Unbeaten Fryers has impressed onlookers in his opening 11 fights as a professional and he will get another chance to strut his stuff as he takes on Maxi Hughes in a British title eliminator at the Europa Hotel in Belfast on Saturday night.

And Fryers says that the thought of facing Hughes in Belfast has got his blood pumping.

“I said last year that I wanted a big year in 2016 and this is my chance to keep moving forward and getting a British title fight in the coming months.

“Hughes has fought in a ten rounder and has fought better opposition than myself and that in itself has motivated me.

“I have been training twice a day and I am really up for this one. And it is great to have this fight in my home town,” he added.

And Fryers says that he has not over researched his opponent before Saturday night’s encounter.

“He is a southpaw and a bot of a counter puncher - but I only had a quick look because I would rather work it out on the night.

“I have had a look at his record and he has a couple of stoppage wins on his record and he has only been stopped once - when he retired himself with a badly damaged nose.

“I expect to get a few rounds under my belt but I will win this one,” he added.

And Fryers also says he is delighted to be headlining a show in Belfast.

“This is the first time I have headlined a show and that has also given me more motivation and it great for me to be the main fight on a bill with James Tennyson, Paul Hyland, Joe Fitzpatrick and the rest,” he added.

The chief support is Belfast’s James Tennyson against Antonio Horvatic (Croatia) in what turns out to be a warm up for his looming British Featherweight Title Challenge.

Paul Hyland Jnr (9-0) faces another stern test in former WSB fighter Jacek Wlyezol (14-12) of Poland.

Joe Fitzpatrick takes on Ruslans Burdimuradovs.

Fergal McCrory should get a good workout against Hungarian Peter Mellar over four rounds at lightweight.

Tyrone McCullagh has his first fight on home soil as a professional against Antons Zacets.

With only a hand full of tickets left doors open 6.30pm for the VIP Pre fight Dinner and general public 7pm, first fight 8pm.
