Marc McCullough will be crowned Commonwealth king says John Breen

John Breen is convinced Marc McCullough will be crowned Commonwealth champion in Manchester on February 27 and finally lay the demons of last summer to rest.

McCullough will face Isaac Lowe on the undercard of Carl Frampton’s IBF and WBA World title showdown against Scott Quigg looking to get his hands on a title that could lead to bigger and better fights down the line.

The hugely popular Belfast featherweight had been on the crest of a wave until a shocking and totally unexpected first round stoppage to Zoltan Kovacs in Germany on July 30 derailed his route to the top.

It was gut wrenching as in the months before that McCullough had fought his way to the WBO European title and had also hauled himself into the top ten of the WBO’s rankings.

But all that progress came to a shuddering halt in Germany and now after victories against Sergejs Logins and Sergio Prado, Breen is sure McCullough will get the job done against Lowe.

“He is over that defeat now and in his last fight against Prado at the Waterfront, he put in a great performance.

“That night against Prado he followed the instructions that we gave him and he boxed really well.

“Sometimes Marc wants to fight - but we want him to box more and he finally seems to be doing that.

“That defeat is behind him now and the Commonwealth title is what we want,” he added.

And Breen says Lowe will not be coming to Manchester to give his fighter the belt.

“This will be Marc’s hardest fight to date. I have watched Lowe and he is a good boxer.

“He is also young and a guy who is looking to go places. I believe Marc will have too much for him, but this is a tough fight,” said Breen.

And Breen says the stage is set for McCullough to show everyone what he is made of.

“This is a huge show with Frampton fighting Quigg and Marc has a real opportunity here to show everyone what he can do. He has a real chance here to make an impression.

“Marc is still young and will develop but this is a fight he has to win, if he wants to get to the next level.

“And we are confident that he will do that

“He has ticking over in the gym and we have just over seven weeks until the fight, so we have plenty of time.

“This is a massive fight for him and has to be in great shape” said Breen.

And Breen says another one of his stable - Feargal McCrory - will be in action at the Europa Hotel in Belfast on February 6.

“It is only his second fight as a professional and he is coming along well.

“He can punch a bit and he is working hard in the gym. His first fight lasted 30 seconds, so we want him to get more ring time in this fight.

“It is a good test for him and he will spar with McCullough in the run-up to the fight - so he will be in good shape,” added Breen.

In the main fight at the Europa on February 6 James Fryers faces Maxi Hughes in an eliminator for the British Super Featherweight title.

Commonwealth Games Silver Medallist Joe Fitzpatrick fights Ruslans Berdimuradovs.
