It was a disappointing result for the Belfast boxer as he was looking to add to his two Olympic bronze medals.

Barnes was level with his 20-year-old opponent after two rounds and the Spaniard, ranked 26 in the world, took the verdict in the final three minutes.

After the fight Barnes said: “I was drained. It is so hard getting down to this weight and in the second round I had nothing left.

“I was so tired I did not know how I threw a punch in those last two rounds.

“I just had no energy at the weight.”
