The 20-year-old off-spinner from Waringstown, Co Down, lured Root into a loose drive outside the off-stump early in his innings and the national team’s skipper could only edge through to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.

Footage from Sussex’s live stream shows an ecstatic Carson running off to celebrate the prize scalp with his team-mates.

It was Carson’s second wicket of the innings, having earlier picked up the wicket of Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

Carson has chosen to qualify to play for England and only recently in the Sunday Times, he was mentioned by their cricket correspondent Simon Wilde as a potential England off-spinner of the near future.

Sussex are in a strong position to win the game after having taken a 71-run lead in the first innings.
