The Irish pushed the reigning Olympic champions all the way before falling to a 3-2 loss in Deodoro.

Eugene Magee and Mitch Darling were on target but it wasn’t enough to prevent Germany from claiming a hard-earned win.

The defeat means that Ireland must now beat both Canada on Thursday and Argentina on Friday to give themselves a chance at reaching the quarter-finals.

“Against the reigning Olympic champions and the world number three, we improved so much from the game against the Dutch,” Harte said.

“There is an incredible amount of positives we can take from the game, and we should be take great pride of how we performed over the 60 minutes.”

Coach Craig Fulton added: “Our defence definitely improved – they are a good team and the stats will probably prove they had more circle entries than us but our composure was good and we ran hard in the heat.

“We did ourselves justice after coming off the back of a 5-0 loss. I am immensely proud of the guys.”
