Former Linfield goalkeeper Alan Blayney has announced he is hanging up his gloves.

During his spell at Linfield, Blayney won three League and Irish Cup doubles and also earned international recognition, receiving a call-up to the senior Northern Ireland squad.

Blayney started his career with Southampton FC and was loaned out to Stockport County, but his stint was cut short by a broken finger. He also he had a spell at Bournemouth on loan.

His debut for Southampton came in May 2004 and Blayney certainly made a big impression, winning the Sky Sports ‘save of the season’ after saving an Alan Shearer header on his Premier League debut.

He played his first match for Northern Ireland in a 2006 summer tour of the United States, but was on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat against Romania. Three further appearances followed in 2010.

Blayney was chosen as the Ulster Footballer of the year for the 2010–11 season following his success at Windsor Park.

He also had spells at Ballymena United, Ards, Glenavon and Warrenpoint Town.
