Manchester United defeated Manchester City by 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley – here are the PA player ratings:

MANCHESTER CITY

Stefan Ortega – Played Mateo Kovacic into trouble six yards from goal but Bruno Fernandes could not capitalise, then was badly at fault racing from his goal for United’s opener. 5

Kyle Walker – Did well against Marcus Rashford in one-on-ones and hit two excellent shots from outside the box that required superb saves from Andre Onana. 7

John Stones – Lashed a shot badly over the bar as City’s frustrations started to show in the second half. 6

Nathan Ake – Made limited impact in the first half before being withdrawn at the interval. 5

Josko Gvardiol – His header back deceived Ortega for Alejandro Garnacho’s goal, a result of poor communication between defender and goalkeeper. 6

Mateo Kovacic – Another player hooked by Guardiola at the break as he tried to overturn the damage caused in the first 45 minutes. 5

Rodri – Set the tempo as usual in midfield for City. 7

Kevin De Bruyne – A menace with the ball but there was rarely anybody on the end of his deliveries. 7

Bernardo Silva – Gave the ball away in midfield more than once but was at the heart of much of City’s labour as they fought in vain for a way back. 7

Phil Foden – Spurned a golden chance to get City back in it when he kicked at fresh air early in the second half, generally not at his imperious best. 7

Erling Haaland – Not at his sharpest in the first half, more than once failing to reach decent deliveries into the box, but struck the bar with a brilliant effort after the break. 6

Substitutes – Jeremy Doku re-energised City when he came on at half-time and got the late goal, Julian Alvarez showed willingness to take charge and shoot inside the box but spurned a golden chance when clean through on Onana. Manuel Akanji fired over the bar in the last minute and wasted a promising attack. 7

MANCHESTER UNITED

Andre Onana – Made two excellent saves to keep out Walker from range at 2-0 early in the second half then again with 15 minutes to go, but badly at fault for City’s goal. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Was caused problems by Doku after he came on at half-time, never fully looking comfortable against the substitute. 5

Raphael Varane – Defended well on his final appearance for United as he bowed out by lifting the cup. 8

Lisandro Martinez – Fortunate not to concede an early penalty for pushing Haaland in the back. 6

Diogo Dalot – A decent display from one of United’s most consistent performers this season. 8

Sofyan Amrabat – Was a strong physical presence, giving a solid if unspectacular performance to help stifle City’s rhythm. 7

Kobbie Mainoo – The coolest, calmest finish from the 19-year-old to make it 2-0 as he put in yet another assured display that defied his years. 8

Scott McTominay – Went largely unnoticed for much of the game but hardly put a foot wrong throughout. 7

Bruno Fernandes – Superb vision and pass to set up Mainoo’s goal, led by example as United muscled themselves in front then ground out a result. 8

Marcus Rashford – Began the move for United’s second with a brilliant cross-field pass, and caused Walker problems whenever the pair went toe to toe in a foot race. 7

Alejandro Garnacho – Shot straight at Ortega from a good position after eight minutes but was alert to pounce on the goalkeeper’s error for the opening goal. 8

Substitutes – Rasmus Hojlund barely got a touch in the City half as his team clung on, Jonny Evans brought experience to the defence to help see the game out, and Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof were sent on in stoppage time to run down the clock. 6
