IRISH LEAGUE: Dungannon holding on to top six hope

Dungannon Swifts manager Rodney McAree knows getting into the top six before the split is a long shot but he is keeping the faith as his side face Ards at Stangmore Park tomorrow afternoon.

The Swifts lie seventh in the league standings - six points behind sixth placed Glenavon - and McAree still believes there is a glimmer of hope for his side.

“Until it is mathematically impossible to make it into the top six, we will keep trying,” he said.

“We have tough games left before the end of the season and we would need Glenavon to drop points - but we will keep plugging away.

“At this stage of the season it is not about performances - it is about results - so will see where we end up.”

And McAree admits his side will have to be at their best when they face a resurgent Ards side - who are on a high after beating Portadown 3-0 at Shamrock Park in their last league outing.

“Colin Nixon has come in and he has got a response from the players.

“Portadown are always hard to play against at Shamrock and to go down there and win the way they did was a great result.

“We have lost to them this season and the other game was a draw, so we are hoping for a better result this time.”

And McAree says he has a few doubts for tomorrow’s encounter.

“Seanan Clucas is suspended for the match, while Ryan Harpur and Chris Hegarty are doubtful. They will be missed but we have more depth to our squad these days,” he added.
