The former Portadown number two resigned as Gers manager following Saturday's 3-0 defeat at home to Dungannon Swifts.

A statement issued by the Taylor's Avenue club revealed he had stepped down with "immediate effect".

"The club would like to thank Kieran for his hard work and effort, and we wish him well for the future," a spokesman said.

The Gers have endured a torrid time since the start of the season, suffering seven defeats in nine outings. In midweek they lost 4-1 to PSNI in the County Antrim Shield.

Harding was appointed at the end of May, succeeding Gary Haveron who had won a treble and kept the club in the Premiership.

When Harding took over, Carrick owner Michael Hughes, a former Northern Ireland international, said: "“For me, it’s a really positive appointment."

The East Antrim outfit have taken just four points from a possible 27. Their only win of the campaign came against Glentoran in August.
