IRISH LEAGUE: Mikey Withers signs for Portadown

The teenage striker follows former Linfield and Derry City midfielder Philip Lowry to the Ports, but manager Ronnie McFall insists the club’s business is now finished.

“He is one for the future,” said McFall, who on Saturday takes his boys to Solitude for a testing afternoon against Gerard Lyttle’s in-form Cliftonville.

“Withers has signed an 18-month contract. He’s a versatile player – he can feature up top or on the left. He will add pace to our squad – it’s something we lack. He is still young, so he’s one for the future.

“As for any further additions, we’ll not be in a position to do any more business.”

McFall was happy with Lowry’s opening contribution against Crusaders last weekend, even though the Ports succumbed to a last minute Gary Twigg own goal.

Lowry, who is based in England, will travel over for games and train with Keith Rowland’s Ryman Premier League side, Wingate & Finchley.

“I thought he did well on his debut, even though he hasn’t played for a few months,” added McFall. “Philip is naturally fit and keeps himself in good shape. His match fitness will improve. He’ll be a good asset to the club.”

Reflecting on last week’s defeat, he added:“When you are down, you’re down. You don’t tend to get the breaks.”
