David Jeffrey admits 'a lot of hard work has gone in' as Portadown sign former Rangers defender

Portadown manager David Jeffrey says “a lot of hard work has gone on in the background” to secure the services of new signing Mikey Hewitt following his departure from Queen of the South.

The 25-year-old started his career at Scottish giants Rangers before enjoying further spells at Ayr United and Hamilton Academical.

Hewitt made 24 League One appearances for Queen of the South last term, helping them seal a third-placed finish, and also played in both legs of their Championship promotion/relegation play-off showdown against Stenhousemuir – they lost out on penalties.

The defender has now made a switch across the Irish Sea as Jeffrey continues to shape his squad ahead of next season.

“A lot of hard work has gone on in the background to bring Michael to the club, especially from David Douglas who has been tracking Michael and keeping up to speed with how he’s been performing at Queen of the South,” Jeffrey told the club’s website. “We met him and his agent during the week and chatted about Portadown Football Club, our history and what we hope to achieve going forward.

"I was particularly impressed that Michael participated in the process and came across to meet with us as at times, players can detach themselves from these conversations and leave to their agent, but Michael couldn’t wait to get involved and started with us.

“We want players who are hungry and want to be the best version of themselves they can be and won’t accept less than their best from themselves and Michael ticks all those boxes, he’s shown great desire and has already commenced our pre pre-season programme.”

Hewitt admits he was impressed by Jeffrey’s vision for Portadown as he prepares to take charge of the Shamrock Park club for the first time next season after succeeding Niall Currie.

"I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Portadown,” said Hewitt. “After speaking with the gaffer, Davy and Jim the decision was incredibly easy.

"Their ambition for the club really excites me and I can’t wait to be part of it.

“I’m really looking forward to pre season starting, meeting all the lads and supporters and having a successful season.”
