Dean Shiels wants Dungannon Swifts to build on Cup win

It has been a challenging season for Dungannon Swifts to date, but boss Dean Shiels feels Tuesday night’s dramatic extra time win over Portadown in the League Cup will kick start their campaign.

Rhyss Campbell scored with practically the last kick of the game at Stangmore Park to force the game into extra time.

And the forward bagged the winner two minutes into the additional 30 to secure a quarter-final spot and hopefully give his side a much-needed morale boost ahead of today’s trip to Glenavon according to Shiels.

"It gives everyone a massive lift,” he told the club’s Youtube channel.

"When you put so much hard work into something and get no reward it's a real disappointment, which has happened us this season.

"We can really hope to use it as a platform to push on now.

"When you're down there like we are it's tough when things don't go your way.

"If we can show that character, resilience and quality it will stand us in good stead.

"We'll look forward to Saturday with optimism, we have a happy team and we'll use that positivity and take it into the Glenavon game.”

Shiels was delighted to see Campbell pop up with another two goals against the Ports after he scored in the league win over Paul Doolin’s side at the end of last month.

"Rhyss Campbell again, he always seems to pop up against Portadown,” he said.

"He's got that quality. When I first came in I think he got five goals that season.

"He got ten last year and I can see that progression in him.

"He's still a young lad, he's still got room for improvement, but he's starting to add that end product in the final third.

"He had to go in and plays at left back for us to see the game out on Tuesday night because we had so many attacking players on the pitch.

"Everyone to a man really came in and gave everything for the team.

"It was a sweet way to win a match, but I thought it was thoroughly deserved.

"What pleased me most though was the character, we kept going.

"We showed so much character and togetherness to drive right until the end."
